Coleman's Concept Design for the Responsive Access,
Small Cargo, and Affordable Launch (RASCAL) Program

In 2002, the Coleman Aerospace team (including Coleman, Vela, Pan Aero, and XCOR Aerospace) was awarded a DARPA contract to conduct trade studies and develop a preliminary design for Responsive Access, Small Cargo, Affordable Launch (RASCAL), a small delivery system with the ability to place satellites and small commodity payloads into low-earth orbit at any time. The system would be comprised of a reusable airplane-like first stage vehicle and a second and third stage expendable rocket vehicle (ERV) that could be launched independent of test ranges, with minimal support equipment, and with a 24-hour turnaround time for each mission.
The Coleman team successfully completed the Phase I study of this of the DARPA RASCAL contract.
